statistics access FAQ

Why do I have to apply for access?

The data products (i.e. the tables) on the GWD are not available for full public use. Data in the statistics section are custom produced by Statistics Canada and other statistical agencies such as Eurostat. Tables may contain dimensions that are not available in Public Use Microdata Files (PUMFs), or they may contain crosstabulations that are not available elsewhere in published data. The GWD has purchased this data and made it available through the website. Statistics Canada controls dissemination of its data products. We have an agreement with Statistics Canada that stipulates that the data is not available for open public use.

Thus, researchers wishing to use the data must be granted access with a username and password. Access is free of charge, but researchers must be affiliated with an approved institution or organization. Users must also agree that the data is to be used for NON COMMERCIAL PURPOSES ONLY. It may only be used for academic or non profit/community research and teaching.
