{"id":382,"date":"2012-08-16T12:41:30","date_gmt":"2012-08-16T16:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/?page_id=382"},"modified":"2016-04-08T09:32:56","modified_gmt":"2016-04-08T13:32:56","slug":"statistics-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/statistics\/statistics-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"statistics tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #000000;\">STATISTICS TUTORIAL<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>STARTING WITH A RESEARCH QUESTION<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Statistical tables begin with a research question based on what we would like to know about a particular relationship. In the case of this database, the kinds of questions we asked had to do with relationships of gender and work from an international context. For example, we might ask:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>\u201cIn 2011 were part-time workers more likely to be male or female in Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom?\u201d<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">This tells us that:<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n1. gender is an important factor here (male or female)<br \/>\n2. we are looking for a form of employment, in this case part-time workers<br \/>\n3. we are looking at international data<br \/>\n4. time is an important factor here, in this case we are interested in the most recent year available (2011)<br \/>\n5. we are trying to draw a conclusion based on the relationship between them, in this case who is more (or less) likely to be working part-time<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>BUILDING A TABLE<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">To move from a research question to a statistical table, we begin with establishing variables. A variable is a property of something which can have different values. For example, a variable to answer our research question above is \u201csex\u201d, which can be broken down into two parts: male and female. Each variable should be exhaustive (in other words, it covers all the ways the category can be expressed: male, female, and total \u2013 both sexes), and should be mutually exclusive (males can be differentiated from females).<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>SURVEY USE<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Researchers then turn to national and international surveys to answer their question. The CPD uses data from seven surveys focused on the study of work, labour and employment.\u00a0 The CPD includes the following surveys:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.melbourneinstitute.com\/hilda\/\" target=\"_blank\">Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&amp;SDDS=3701&amp;Item_Id=103716&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Labour Force Survey (CA LFS)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www23.statcan.gc.ca\/imdb\/p2SV.pl?Function=getSurvey&amp;SDDS=3889&amp;Item_Id=132027&amp;lang=en\" target=\"_blank\">Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics (SLID)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/microdata\/european-community-household-panel\" target=\"_blank\">The European Community Household Panel (ECHP)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/microdata\/european-union-statistics-on-income-and-living-conditions\" target=\"_blank\">The Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/microdata\/european-union-labour-force-survey\" target=\"_blank\">The European Union Labour Force Survey (EU LFS)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: black;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cps.ipums.org\/cps\/\" target=\"_blank\">The United States Current Population Survey (CPS)<\/a><\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each survey has particular strengths and weaknesses. For example, some surveys have been discontinued, which means they are no longer being funded to operate, such as the ECHP. Other surveys are done regularly, and provide users with current up-to-date information. As much as possible the CPD uses data that can be updated easily and that provides overlap across the years of data availability to facilitate cross-national comparability. Some surveys offer more in-depth information than others about areas of interest.<\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">For more information on the surveys and the harmonization of variables, refer to the appropriate documents found on the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/?page_id=612\" target=\"_blank\">cpd harmonization documents<\/a><\/strong> page.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CHOOSING MULTIDIMENSIONAL TABLES<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nEach multidimensional table has a coded name to reflect the main theme of the table.\u00a0 For example, some tables are designed to consider demographic and social location indicators, while others are designed to map income and benefits.\u00a0 A multidimensional table considering demographic and social location variables will have the following coded name in brackets at the end of the short and full table title:<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>HSC DE-1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This code indicates that the table is specific to the health and social care module <strong>(HSC)<\/strong> and that it is number <strong>1<\/strong> in the series of tables on demographics and social location <strong>(DE)<\/strong>.\u00a0 Tables in the forms of precarious employment module will have the following format for a similar table: <strong>FORMS DE-1<\/strong>.\u00a0 For temporal and spatial dynamics, the table code would be <strong>TSD DE-1<\/strong>. If users are looking for a particular theme, these codes are a helpful guide. The themes have the following codes:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nDemographics and social location: <strong>DE<\/strong><br \/>\nHousehold context: <strong>HC<\/strong><br \/>\nGeography and time: <strong>GE<\/strong><br \/>\nWork context and regulatory protection: <strong>WC<\/strong><br \/>\nForms of employment: <strong>FE<\/strong><br \/>\nIncome and benefits: <strong>IB<\/strong><br \/>\nHealth and social care:<strong> HS<\/strong><br \/>\nMigration and mobility: <strong>MB<\/strong><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>CHOOSING VARIABLES<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each module is organized so that multidimensional tables cover all of the major themes of the CPD.\u00a0 These themes include:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<strong>Demographics and social location<\/strong> (e.g. sex, age, immigrant status)<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Household context<\/strong> (e.g. marital status, presence or absence of children)<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Geography and time<\/strong> (e.g. year, country of residence)<br \/>\n<strong>Work context and regulatory protection<\/strong> (e.g. industry, occupation, sector)<br \/>\n<strong>Forms of employment <\/strong>(e.g. part-time, full-time, temporary, permanent, self-employed)<br \/>\n<strong>Income and benefits<\/strong> (e.g. annual average income, pension benefits)<br \/>\n<strong>Health and social care<\/strong> (e.g. disability status, absenteeism)<br \/>\n<strong>Migration and mobility<\/strong> (e.g. persons who have migrated the previous year, persons who have moved locations)<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Variables are cross-tabulated to produce tables that illustrate relationships. The research question for this tutorial is: <em>what proportion of part-time workers are women, in Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom for 2011<\/em>? <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is a simple table with data related to this research question:<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-stats-tut_table-1.jpg\" alt=\"wxample of multidimensional table showing conts for full-time and part-time employment by sex Canada, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom in 2011\" width=\"825\" height=\"204\" \/><br \/>\n<em>source: FORMS FE-3<\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">In response to our research question, we can see that females are consistently more likely to be part-time workers when compared to their male counterparts, for each country in 2011. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">To calculate the percentages from these numbers, click on the \u201cTotal and Percentages\u201d icon on the Table tab, located on the top left corner of the webpage, and scroll down to \u201cPercentage of row total\u201d, we can calculate the percentage of men and women by full-time and part-time employment.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/change-1.jpg\" alt=\"example of generating percentages in Beyond 20\/20 tables using the table tab\" width=\"202\" height=\"148\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe table below demonstrates the result with percentages calculated:<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cps-stats-tut_table3.jpg\" alt=\"example of table displaying percentages of full-time and part-time employment for men and women in Canada, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom in 2011\" width=\"567\" height=\"156\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">We can see that in Canada nearly 67% of part-time workers are female and approximately 33% are male. Similarly, in the United States 62% are female and in Australia 68% are female. The United Kingdom has the highest percentage of female part-time workers at 74%. From this we can conclude that part-time workers are more likely to be female. Further, these data demonstrate the importance of breaking down labour force data by gender to reveal these gendered employment patterns.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">The multidimensional tables in the CPD are quite complicated as compared to the one above. Each table contains up to eight dimensions (variables). The dimensions are subdivided into smaller groups, called items. For example, in the dimension \u201csex\u201d, the items are \u201ctotal, male, female\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thus, it is useful to have a clear research question before exploring the statistical tables.\u00a0 What relationship(s) do you want the data to highlight? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>THE DEFAULT VIEW<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">CPD tables are organized so that when users open them, the topic of the table is displayed in the most concise format. Below is a sample default table for rural and urban geography, including dimensions of country, year, age, detailed forms, occupation, and sex. In the default view, most of the variables are collapsed to their totals. <\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-stats-tut_table-4.jpg\" alt=\"example of default view for multidimensional table\" width=\"486\" height=\"277\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Once you have opened the table to its default view, you can then manipulate it as you would like. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\">MODIFYING THE TABLE LAYOUT<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each statistical table can be modified to highlight certain dimensions and items of interest, in relation to the research question. This section demonstrates how to modify tables.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rearranging Dimensions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By default, most of the dimensions are organized on the left side of the table. The order of these dimensions can be rearranged to highlight what is of interest in the analysis. There must always be at least one dimension in the row bar and column bar. To rearrange the dimensions, click the \u201cSet dimension order\u201d from the Table tab. This allows users to move and modify the order of the dimensions.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cps-stat-tut_table5.jpg\" alt=\"example of rearranging dimension order in Beyond 20\/20, moving dimensions from columns to rows to other\" width=\"570\" height=\"369\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">You may also want to select or deselect items to view within a table. Simply click on the dimension of interest, and select (or deselect) the desired items.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cps-stat-tut_table-6.jpg\" alt=\"example of selecting adn de-selecting items from dimensions\" width=\"567\" height=\"255\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Nesting Dimensions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some cases it may be useful to nest dimensions in order to achieve a concise visual representation. Instead of comparing laterally across the cells, the \u201csex\u201d dimension can be nested within the \u201crural\/urban\u201d dimension.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">1. Start by hovering over the \u201csex\u201d dimension until the cross-arrows cursor appears, click and hold the dimension until it becomes a yellow bar.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-stats-tut_table-7.jpg\" alt=\"example of nesting dimensions by slecting dimensions sex is highlighted\" width=\"486\" height=\"277\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">2. While holding the highlighted dimension with your cursor, drag the dimension to the dimension you want to nest it within. To nest, the yellow bar will highlight the tip of the other dimension; the yellow bar shows where it will be moved. To create a visualization of data, select the Chart tab located on the top left side of the table, next to the Table tab.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/change-2.jpg\" alt=\"example of chart tab in Beyond 20\/20 for generating charts and graphs\" width=\"189\" height=\"70\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nFrom the Chart tab, you can modify the chart or graph by selecting the specific type you want to display your data.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/change-3.jpg\" alt=\"drop down menu of different chart and graph options with column chart selected\" width=\"147\" height=\"339\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Below is an example of a column chart:<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-stats-tut_table-12.jpg\" alt=\"coumn bar chart of rural\/urban by sex by occuaption in multidimensional table\" width=\"546\" height=\"800\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hiding Dimensions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unnecessary dimensions may be hidden, or removed, from table view. Before hiding any dimensions, ensure the dimension is set to the total. Start by hovering over the dimension you want to hide until the cross-arrows cursor appears; click and hold the dimension until it becomes a yellow bar. Drag the dimension to the &#8220;Other:&#8221; bar, located at the top of the table. In this example, &#8220;<\/span>Occupation&#8221; is not relevant and will be removed from the table view.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-stats-tut_table-13.jpg\" alt=\"example of hiding dimensions from table view in the other row at the top of the table\" width=\"528\" height=\"382\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Calculating Totals<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In some cases, users may want to calculate a different total than what is provided in the table.\u00a0 Also, some multidimensional tables may not have a total calculated for a particular dimension.\u00a0 In this case, from the Table tab users should select <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cTotals and Percentages\u201d, then click the option for \u201cRow total&#8221; or &#8220;Column total&#8221;.\u00a0 Selecting either will calculate the total for the row or column, depending on which total is desired.<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>MISSING AND SUPPRESSED DATA <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Specific symbols may appear in the table cells to signify missing, suppressed or unreliable data:<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-stats-tut_table-14.jpg\" alt=\"example of suppressed data and data that is not available represented by a period or dashed lines\" width=\"522\" height=\"210\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nThe CPD multidimensional tables contain two symbols: a double-dashed line and a single period or dot.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\nA <strong>double-dashed line &#8220;- -&#8220;<\/strong> is used to represent <em>no data<\/em> or missing data<\/span><br \/>\nA<strong> single period or dot &#8220;.&#8221; <\/strong>is used to represent suppressed data.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Each survey has a cutoff below which data records may not be published and should be suppressed. Suppression generally occurs either because to show a small number of specific cases would compromise the anonymity of survey respondents, or because the group is too small for researchers to draw accurate conclusions from the sample. Each survey varies in its sample size and rules for suppression. For more information, consult the CPD <a href=\"http:\/\/www.genderwork.ca\/cpd\/wp-content\/uploads\/cpd-data-quality-+-suppression.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>data quality + suppression<\/strong><\/a> excel document for survey specific threshold limits by country and year. <\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Note &#8211; the EU LFS suppression limits changes on an annual basis. Users should consult the Eurostat website for more detail on data <a href=\"http:\/\/epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu\/statistics_explained\/index.php\/EU_labour_force_survey_%E2%80%93_data_and_publication\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>publication guidelines and thresholds<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>USING STATISTICAL DATA<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is essential that you are careful in how you use statistical data. First, you should think about what story you are trying to tell with the data. Numeric data does not stand alone. It needs to be interpreted through a conceptual framework which each researcher provides. <em>What questions are you trying to answer with this data? What is the best way to apply the data to your specific needs?<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;\">Second, do not assume that because statistical data is numeric that it is <em>truth<\/em>. Be critical of how the data was obtained, and what types of questions were asked.
